Can I use the DCC to control other loads?

Yes, the DCC can be used for loads other than an EV charger. But it’s also important to know why you would want to control and offload energy, such as with the DCC, an EV energy management system (sometimes called a Demand Charge Controller) developed by RVE. Here we’ll explain what you can do with the DCC besides electric vehicle energy management, as well as address the types of loads that a panel handles.

Think of your charging station like a typical household appliance

Electric vehicles (EVs) are slowly changing the world, but the world has been slowly changed by electrical appliances for a while now. Think of all the additional electricity needs that an average homeowner might have today. From the not-so-much-a-luxury-anymore: high-resolution TVs, high-performing PCs, and HVAC units, to the maybe-a-luxury-but-it’s-so-nice-to-have: hot tubs, saunas, and pool heating systems.

Home charging stations are another type of appliance or electrical load on circuits that are already in high demand. The electrical need of an EV is almost always the reason estimates for a charging station or EVSE installation will get  expensive for the single-family homeowner, and why there can be an extraordinary cost to making a multi-family property EV-ready.

RVE developed the DCC to safely manage these loads using a smart-switch technology in a compact device that gets “plugged into” the infrastructure already in place – meaning minimal upgrades. Anytime an appliance that’s wired to the DCC consumes more than 80% of a panel’s capacity, the appliance will shut down until the panel is below the threshold for 15 minutes. 

Which other appliances can be controlled with the DCC?

We write appliances here because the DCC, due to its “demand charge controller” technology, can be used for more than just an EV charging load. The DCC by RVE and its energy management technology can be used to control: HVAC units, hot tubs, spas, jacuzzis, pools and pool heaters, floor heating, generators, sewage pumps, and many other non-essential loads. The DCC can be connected to resistive loads up to 48A and inductive loads up to 40A, as long as applicable electric codes are respected and as long as the system is installed by a certified professional.  

Patented as an industrial load controller, the DCC can be used for any power-heavy, non-essential or non-critical loads, with continuous or non-continuous draws that fall within the amperage range indicated in our documentation. A non-essential load will be one that can be turned off when everything that is essential (or essential to you) needs to stay running. 

The DCC, for your peace of mind

The DCC by RVE is the best fit for something, like a charging station, spa, pool heater, or even sometimes an air conditioning unit, that draws an amount of energy that might be too much for a standard panel, during those peak times of day when you need to be running what your electrical panel can handle, and especially on holidays when you’ve got your oven and every other cooking device on at once.

An energy management system like the DCC takes the worry away from having to set a time where your electric vehicle isn’t charging, or from when your pool heater might trip the breaker if it comes on; all for the peace of mind in knowing that the electricity you’re in need of, can be turned on safely.
