Copper Tariffs Take Effect August 1st — What This Means for EV Charging Projects in the U.S.
August 5, 2025
4 minutes
As of August 1st, 2025, new U.S. tariffs on copper and certain imported goods came into effect, raising important considerations for contractors and project managers across the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) industries.
These measures, aimed at protecting domestic production, introduce:
- 50% tariffs on imported copper
- 35% tariffs on Canadian goods
- 30% tariffs on goods from Mexico and the European Union (EU)
Note: Mexico has received a 90-day extension to finalize a trade agreement, meaning its tariff implementation is temporarily delayed.
For many stakeholders, these changes raise concerns about rising material costs, pricing instability, and potential project delays — particularly for systems that rely heavily on copper components, such as electrical infrastructure and EV charging equipment.
Understanding the USMCA Exemption
While the headline figures suggest broad increases, not all goods from Canada and Mexico are affected by the new tariffs. Under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), products that meet origin certification standards — including refined copper and equipment manufactured in North America — may qualify for full tariff exemption.
This is a key point for U.S.-based professionals working with Canadian suppliers: goods that comply with USMCA rules are not subject to the new tariffs.
All current RVE products qualify under the USMCA and are exempt from the new tariffs.
RVE Products: No Tariff Impact, No Price Increase
In light of these developments, we want to clarify that: All current RVE products qualify under the USMCA and are exempt from the new tariffs.
As a result, our pricing remains unchanged for U.S. clients.
This exemption ensures continuity and predictability for your EV charging projects. There are no new costs related to these policy changes when working with RVE, and no need to adjust budgets or schedules based on tariff-related fluctuations.
Key Takeaways for U.S. Contractors and Partners
A Stable Option in a Changing Environment
As the industry absorbs the impact of these new trade measures, suppliers and clients alike are adjusting their planning and procurement strategies. In this context, working with certified North American partners helps ensure pricing stability and regulatory compliance — two factors that are increasingly important in long-term infrastructure projects.
